Abstract

Uncertainty reduction mechanisms have attracted considerable attention since the emergence of online commerce. However, social commerce constructs have increased the potential of these mechanisms in recent years. The aim of this study is to systematically investigate the reduction of uncertainty in online transactions over the past two decades. To that end, 113 relevant references were identified by developing a systematic review protocol during the planned search. In addition, 171 uncertainty mechanisms were identified in these references. Through a systematic review of the literature, we identified all dimensions of uncertainty in online commerce, including types of factors, theoretical perspectives, timeframes, cognitive maps, and key topics of focus. In this review, we study and examine in detail the role of social commerce constructs. This study serves as an important reference and provides a detailed and practical roadmap for researchers intending to conduct any type of study on uncertainty in online commerce.
