As the global fisheries sector continues to undergo rapid industrialization and commercialization, traditional fishing communities, particularly artisanal and small-scale fishers, face increasing marginalization. These communities, historically dependent on fisheries for their livelihoods and cultural identity, now confront significant economic and social challenges. Often undervalued and categorized as part of a low-income workforce, they risk being excluded from the evolving maritime economy. In response to these pressures, fishery tourism has emerged as an innovative and integrative model that combines traditional fishing practices with sustainable tourism, offering opportunities for economic diversification, cultural preservation, environmental education and community empowerment. By incorporating fishery-based experiences into the tourism sector, fishery tourism provides alternative income sources while promoting responsible marine stewardship. This review aims to examine fishery tourism's global development and potential by analysing case studies from various regions. The study will explore socio-economic, cultural, and environmental implications, identify best practices, and assess challenges in implementation. Particular emphasis will be placed on community participation, inclusive governance, capacity building, and cross-sectoral collaboration. The paper seeks to evaluate how fishery tourism, when effectively integrated, can empower marginalized communities and contribute to sustainable coastal development.
